Dear Diva: METHODS TO STOP YOUR DOG FROM DIGGING

bootcamp

There can be a variety of reasons that your dog is digging holes in your garden. For instance, he may be feeling bored or troubled. Whatever the reasons, you don't want an array of patches in your garden. You would rather have a well behaved and happy dog. So it is time to think about what is causing these actions and how you can prevent such destructive behavior.

If you've ever started to plant some shrubs only to see your sweet doggy friend digging the plants up right afterwards you are probably far from happy. What causes such behavior though? Again many dogs were bred to dig and the faintest smell of some tasty ingredient but in the ground or a rabbit scent might cause your dog to dig. These natural instincts of the dog can be hard to stop. But you can distract the dog from such behavior by keeping him interested in other things. As soon as your dog gets bored he will probably just go back to digging holes, so always keep him active.

When you give your dog constant exercise you are also making him more likely to rest

when at home. Yes, if you tire your dog out well enough, you should be able to keep him from those nicely planted beds in your garden. This doesn't always have to be hard work for you either. You can happily sit back on your chair while playing catch with your dog.

You might have chosen to take your dog to behavior classes. If so, make sure you keep up with regular practice of the routines given your dog. Consistently following these lessons with your dog is what'll make them work. You could even have a spot in the garden for your dog to dig in. There you could get the animal's favorite toys and bury them for him to find. Perhaps he'll then stick to this specific area for digging as well. Who knows!

If your dog is outside more than inside, then you should provide him with sufficient shelter from the weather. If he doesn't have this protection from the sun and other such conditions this could well be why he is digging his holes to give himself some cover. Your dog might be digging holes to try and do a grand escape from your garden. If this appears to be the case then you can try giving him lots of distractions from doing so. You can also make sure your fence is buried about one foot bellow the surface of the garden.
