Dear Diva: The Dieting Dog

diet

Do people laugh at your dog? Does he or she waddle down the street? Do people mistake it for a sausage? Are they actually surprised she can walk? Does he have a waist or is it one long, round tube? When was the last time you saw her ribs?

If you are in possession of the amazing ribless dog, your dog is beyond pleasantly plump. It is obese and you need to do something about it. Now, before the dog becomes seriously ill.Getting your puppy to rediscover a waistline is not easy.

It will be difficult for you and your pet to readjust to the new diet. Yet, just like in human dieting, you all need to get on side. It is essential for everybody to adapt to the new feeding program. If you do not, it may fail. There are many ways to help porky cut down on his girth. The following is a list of suggested measures. Choose one or mix and match. Be sure your dog is healthy. Take him or her to a vet before you decide to cut down.

1. Keep your dog out of the kitchen when you are cooking. This way you will not absently

toss down food. Although you may miss the clean shine your pet can gives your floor, it is best this way.

2. If you are training, cut down on the size and amount of the tidbits your pet receives for good behavior. Give a 1/2 biscuit instead of a complete biscuit.

3. If you have other pets, make sure your little hoover is not eating more than his fair share.

4. Consider life stage or diet food.

5. High fiber dog food may also help.

Be aware, though, the amount of poop forthcoming can be impressive.

There is one final note. As with any diet, cutting down and changing your diet is never enough. You, and your pet, need to exercise, exercise and exercise. Make it a daily routine. Incorporate the family. Make play time a work time. Before you launch into a doggy boot camp, check with your Vet. Depending upon the shape and size of your dog, you may have to start out easy and build up.While dieting may be a difficult period in your relationship with both your dog and family, it is worth it. Without slimming down to a satisfactory weight, your dog can put excess strain on his heart, his joints and other parts of his body. By enforcing a proper diet and exercise program, you are extending your dog, and your life.
