Dear Diva Organic vs. Commercial Dog Food?
Organic vs. Commercial Dog Food

There are differences between "organic" and "natural" food. In the case of dog food this is also very true! If you have been considering switching switching to organic dog food there are several things to consider. The primary rule to remember is NOT to mix the two categories up. The main thing by which you can recognize which of the two is most suited for your canine is: Organic foods are natural ALL the time, and Natural foods are NOT always natural.

The United States does not have any agencies specialized in inspecting and ensuring the food produced and commercialized for pets is entirely organic. There are dog foods brands present on the market that are natural foods. Many of the companies that exist on the market have claimed their products to be organic and listed them in this manner but the truth can be found when you look at a food label. Despite the advertising, the reality is often quite different.

This can prove to be upsetting news. There are organizations that are meant to oversee dog food production, give their approval and ensure the companies producing the foods stick to the same standards in quality as the ones that have been set for human organic food. There are organizations which allow various companies (that pay enough) to be listed under the category of organic regardless of the fact they should truly be listed as natural due to the presence of certain chemicals in the food. Sadly, the fact is buyer beware and always reading the label to ensure the standards of the USDA are respected to the letter.

The main difference between the food that is labeled as being "organic" and the one that is advertised as being "natural" dog food is the fact that the organic food is created by using human grade meat. This final product does not contain any additives, byproducts, antibiotics, pesticides or herbicides in the mix. The main ingredients used are high quality whole grains and high grade meat. Natural food brands don't have a standard to rely on in the case of human food. Both organic and natural food types contain a decent amount of minerals and vitamins.

The only reason why most people prefer to buy natural over organic food is the price. In many situations the organic food will have a price that is double the amount you have to pay for natural food. Organic food does come in limited supply and this may well be another factor why the public chooses to purchase natural food instead. There are people with pets that choose to feed their pets human food just so they will not be forced to offer their furry companions commercial food that contains various chemicals.

Regardless of the decision that every owner has to make you should make your decision based on the health of your canine. Dietary changes should only be implemented with the blessing of your veterinarian. This case should be treated with a high degree of importance to avoid future health problems that your dog might face and to dodge having to pay a lot of medical bill for your canine.
